Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year!

Aug. 10:  review syllabus posted on front page of website.   Sign and return the syllabus signature page that was distributed in class.

Aug. 11: Bring Composition Book if you have not already done so.  Return signed signaure sheet by Wednesday.

Aug. 12:  Complete the Gods and Goddesses assignment – due Thursday.

Aug 17:  Look up vocabulary definitions – quiz Friday.  (Extra Credit for flashcards)  plundered, squall, dispatched, mammoth, limpid, impetuous, shambling, squandered, insidious, and wiles

Aug 18:  Write one paragraph explaining what a hero means to you – due Wednesday.

Aug 19:  Review vocabulary for quiz on Friday.

Aug 24:  In MLA format, write the events from the Cyclops’ cave from the point of view of the Cyclops, sheep, or one of Odysseus’ men (a paragraph to one page in length) – due Wednesday.

New vocabulary:  voracious, tenacious, suppliant, plentitude, impertinent, titanic, assuage, bereft, ardor, and hubris.  Quiz Friday.

Aug 25:  Use the attached MLA format review to help you write your Cyclop’s story.   MLA format sample paper

Aug 27:  Review for vocabulary quiz.

Aug 31:  New vocabulary – beguiling, wanton, imperious, augury, dissemble, lithe, incredulity, bemusing.  Quiz Friday.

Sept 1:  Type a one page response to the following prompt:  Describe a temptation you have faced and overcome -  due Wednesday and must be in correct MLA format.

 Sept 8:  New vocabulary: squalid, obdurate, tumult, consummate, glowering, equity, maudlin, contempt.  Quiz Friday. 

Sept 9:  Write an entry in Odysseus’s journal about his return to Ithaca (use correct  MLA format).  Part 1 Quiz Thursday.

Sept 10:  Review for vocabulary quiz.

Sept 14:  New vocabulary: phobia, acrophobia, agoraphobia, claustrophobia, hydrophobia, monophobia, xenophobia, photophobia.  Remeber to review past vocabulary lists – Quiz Friday.

Sept 16:  The Odyssey test will be Tuesday, Sept. 22nd.

Sept 17:  Review for vocabulary quiz.

Sept 21:  Odyssey Test Tuesday – Odysseus Resume due Wednesday.

Sept 24:  Personal Odyssey essays due at the end of class Friday.  Personal Odyssey Essay (2)

Sept 28: New vocabulary – palpable, indolently, bizarre, naive, scruples, blandly, grotesque, futile, wanton, explicit.  Quiz Friday.

Sept 29:  Complete Poetry Writing Process boxes #1-6.    Poetry Writing Process

Oct 1:  Review vocabulary words for quiz.  The Poetry Writing Process packet should be completed through box #12.

Oct 5:  In correct MLA format, type the last paragraph to “The Most Dangerous Game” explaining how Zaroff died.

Oct 6:  Final copy of Poetry Place Poem due Thursday, Oct. 8th.  New vocabulary:  deplorable, pungent, intricate, debacle, ardent, anguish, abrupt, taint.  Quiz Thursday.

Oct 12:  New vocabulary:  precluded, retribution, accosted, afflicted, explicit, recoiling, termination, subsided.  Definitions and sentences due Tuesday, Quiz Friday - remember to study previous vocabulary words.  The Cask of Amontillado review questions due Tuesday.

Oct 14:  Study for vocabulary quiz.  Travel brochures due at the end of class on Thursday.   Technical Writing Unit 2 Brochure

Oct 19:  New Vocabulary:  placid, garish, recounted, sullen, furtively, imperative, reconnaisance, fretful.  Definitions and sentences (your own) due Tuesday – quiz Friday.

Oct 21:  Finish reading “The Birds” p.69-82.

Oct 22:  Review for vocabulary quiz.

Oct 26:  Final typed copy of Suspense Story in MLA format due Friday with rough draft of intro paragraph attached  (minimum of 500 words or two pages typed double spaced).

Nov 2:  New vocabulary:  hyperbole, hypoactive, hyperactive, hypotension, hypertension, hyperopia, myopia, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, atrophy, hypodermic.  Definitions and sentences due Tuesday and quiz on Friday.

Nov 3:  Optional – Bring in your own copy of Chaim Potak’s The Chosen by Monday and receive a homework pass.

Nov 5:  Write a one paragraph response to how a historical event has impacted your life.  Review vocabulary.

Nov 9:  New vocabulary – accentuate, barrage, disheveled, emancipate, fervently, Gentile, harangue, interim, silhouette,  zealousness.  Definitions and sentences due Tuesday.
